  19.           ***  WHAT IS MEAL-MASTER?  ***
  20.           
  21.                Meal-Master is a menu-driven database system especially
  22.                created and tailored to manage recipes.  With Meal-Master,
  23.                you can store, update, and print your recipes in a variety
  24.                of formats.  But the real power of Meal-Master lies in its
  25.                search and utility functions!
  26.                
  27.                You can search for recipes using any combination of Title,
  28.                Category, or Ingredient criteria.  Imagine being able to
  29.                find all the recipes that can be made with a certain
  30.                ingredient!  Plus, just change the number of servings a
  31.                recipe makes, and all the individual ingredient amounts will
  32.                be adjusted automatically!

  34.                To help in entire menu preparation, you can "mark" recipes
  35.                as you select them.  Then activate the Shopping List
  36.                function:  Meal-Master will find the ingredients for all the
  37.                marked recipes, total the quantities of like items, and
  38.                print a shopping list!
  39.                
  40.                Other features allow you to print a recipe index by title or
  41.                category, "batch" print a set of recipes, or "extract"
  42.                recipes to a standard DOS file, so you can use it in a word
  43.                processor or upload it to a bulletin board system.
  44.                Extracted recipes can also be "imported" back into
  45.                Meal-Master without retyping - making recipe exchange with
  46.                friends that use Meal-Master a real snap!

  48.                Meal-Master not only replaces the dog-eared, disorganized
  49.                collection of index cards found in most kitchens, it
  50.                provides a valuable tool for meal selection and preparation!

  53.           ***  WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED?  ***

  55.                Meal-Master should run on any IBM-PC, PC-XT, or close
  56.                compatible with at least 256k of memory.  It will run on
  57.                floppy or hard disk systems, with either a color or
  58.                monochrome monitor.

  73.           ***  HOW DO I GET STARTED?  ***
  74.           
  75.                To start using Meal-Master, you need only the program file,
  76.                named MM.EXE.  When you type "MM" and press return,
  77.                Meal-Master should begin running.
  78.                
  79.                Meal-Master stores your recipes in three files:  INDEX.MMF,
  80.                INGRED.MMF, and DIRECT.MMF.  It uses a fourth file,
  81.                PARM.MMF, to store information such as what kind of forms
  82.                you are using on your printer.  Starting with version 5.00,
  83.                there is also a fifth file, CATFILE.MMF, which is used to
  84.                store a list of valid recipe categories.  If any of these
  85.                files are not found when Meal-Master starts, they are
  86.                created automatically.  This makes Meal-Master very easy to
  87.                install:  just copy the MM.EXE file to the diskette or hard
  88.                disk directory of your choice, type MM, and press return.
  89.                Meal-Master will ask you for the operating parameters it
  90.                needs to build the PARM.MMF file, then create a new recipe
  91.                database.

  95.                   If you have been using a previous version of
  96.                   Meal-Master (or Meal-Meister), with a version number
  97.                   less than 5.01, then your current working disk or
  98.                   hard disk directory will contain two program files,
  99.                   MM.COM and MM.000.  YOU SHOULD DELETE THESE TWO FILES
  100.                   before attempting to use version 5.01 or higher of
  101.                   Meal-Master.  Alternately, create a new working disk
  102.                   (or directory) and copy your database files (*.MMF)
  103.                   to the new disk or directory, along with the new
  104.                   program file.
  105.                   
  106.                   Version 5.01 and higher of Meal-Master consists of
  107.                   one program file, MM.EXE.  If both the new (MM.EXE)
  108.                   and old (MM.COM) files are present on the disk and
  109.                   directory when you type "MM" and press return, the
  110.                   new program will be ignored and the old program will
  111.                   be run.
  112.                   
  113.                   Also, for Meal-Master to run properly you must have
  114.                   the file CONFIG.SYS in the root directory of the disk
  115.                   you boot from, and it must contain a "FILES=xx"
  116.                   statement, where "xx" is at least (11).  If not, some
  117.                   Meal-Master functions will not operate.
  118.                   
  119.                If you're in a hurry to see how some of Meal-Master's
  120.                advanced features work, you can try it out with the sample
  121.                recipe database provided.  Make sure that the provided
  122.                INDEX.MMF, INGRED.MMF, DIRECT.MMF, PARM.MMF, and CATFILE.MMF
  123.                are on the same disk and directory as the program files, and
  124.                start Meal-Master.  Then try out the search, shopping list
  125.                and batch print options.  You can keep these recipes and add
  126.                to them, or delete the files and start your own database.

  139.           ***  OK, IT'S RUNNING - NOW WHAT?  ***
  140.           
  141.                Meal-Master is completely menu driven and very easy to use.
  142.                
  143.                ADDING RECIPES
  144.                     Selecting 'A' from the main menu allows you to add new
  145.                     recipes to the file.  You will be prompted for the
  146.                     title, categories (each recipe can reference up to five
  147.                     categories), and number of servings.  When asked for
  148.                     categories, a window will be displayed containing all
  149.                     the valid category names (If more than one page of
  150.                     names exist, the PGUP and PGDN keys will move through
  151.                     the categories; and category names can be changed,
  152.                     added, or deleted from the Maintenance/Setup menu).
  153.                     
  154.                     Next, Meal-Master will display the ingredient screen.
  155.                     To add an ingredient, press the "INSERT" key or the "I"
  156.                     key.  A new line will be inserted, and you will be
  157.                     prompted first for the ingredient quantity, then the
  158.                     unit of measure, and, finally, the ingredient name.
  159.                     
  160.                     The quantity can be entered as either a common fraction
  161.                     (i.e., 1/2) or as the decimal equivalent (i.e., 0.5),
  162.                     but will be displayed in the format selected on the
  163.                     Maintenance/Setup Screen (MM comes setup to display
  164.                     common fractions; if you want to see decimal
  165.                     equivalents, simply change the format option on the
  166.                     Maintenance/Setup Screen).  The quantity field will
  167.                     also accept an "H", to allow a heading to be entered
  168.                     for a group of ingredients.

  170.                     Repeat the steps above for each ingredient you wish to
  171.                     enter.  After all ingredients have been entered, press
  172.                     the "ESC" key to proceed to the direction entry screen.
  173.                     
  174.                     Each line of recipe directions can be added just as
  175.                     ingredients are added - simply press the "I" or
  176.                     "Insert" keys to create a new line, enter the line of
  177.                     text, then press return.  Also, there is a complete
  178.                     "word-wrap" feature available.  If you continue typing
  179.                     past the end of the line, the cursor will automatically
  180.                     break between words and continue on the next line.
  181.                     When all directions have been entered, press the "ESC"
  182.                     key again.
  183.                     
  184.                     If you make a mistake and wish to delete an ingredient
  185.                     or a line of direction text, use the up/down arrow keys
  186.                     to position that line to the center of the display
  187.                     window, then press the F10 key.
  188.

  190.                SEARCHING FOR RECIPES
  191.                     Selecting 'S' from the main menu takes you to the heart
  192.                     of Meal-Master.  Here you can specify search criteria
  193.                     and have Meal-Master find the recipes that match.  You

  205.                     can instruct Meal-Master to select only those recipes
  206.                     that:
  207.                     
  208.                          a)  Contain a certain word or phrase in their
  209.                              title;
  210.                          b)  Reference a certain category (ie, "Soups" or
  211.                              "Main Dishes");
  212.                          c)  Use a specific ingredient;
  213.                          d)  Any combination of the above.
  214.  
  215.                     Once you have entered your search criteria, pressing
  216.                     "S" will start the search.  The number and title of
  217.                     each recipe that qualifies will be listed.  If you
  218.                     start the search without entering any search criteria,
  219.                     all recipes in the file will be listed.  Note that a
  220.                     search may be stopped at any time by pressing the ESC
  221.                     key.

  224.                LISTING, REVISING, and MARKING
  225.                     Recipes found by the search function will be followed
  226.                     by a prompt asking if your wish to List, Revise, or
  227.                     Mark any of them.
  228.                     
  229.                     If you type an "L", another prompt will ask if you want
  230.                     the recipe listed on the screen or on your printer.  If
  231.                     you select the printer, the recipe will be printed
  232.                     using the parameters specified in the
  233.                     "Maintenance/Setup" section of the program ('M' from
  234.                     the main menu; there you can specify what size and type
  235.                     forms you are using for Recipe printouts and for
  236.                     Listings, and specify special printer controls).
  237.                     
  238.                     If you type 'R', you will receive the Revise menu.
  239.                     From here, you can update the selected recipe title and
  240.                     category list; add, delete or revise ingredients and
  241.                     directions; or change the number of servings.  When
  242.                     changing the number of servings, Meal-Master will ask
  243.                     if you want the ingredient quantities adjusted.  If you
  244.                     answer yes, Meal-Master will adjust all the ingredient
  245.                     quantities in the same proportions as the serving size
  246.                     change you have made!
  247.                     
  248.                     You can also 'Remove' a recipe from the file.  When you
  249.                     use this option, the recipe is not really deleted, but
  250.                     just marked as removed.  The recipe can still be seen
  251.                     in searches and can be 'Restored' until it is
  252.                     permanently deleted by use of the "Delete Removed
  253.                     Records" option on the Utilities menu.
  254.                     
  255.                     If you type an 'M', a prompt will ask which recipe you
  256.                     want to mark.  Enter one of the displayed recipe
  257.                     numbers and press return to mark that recipe.  Once
  258.                     some recipes are marked, you can use the 'Shopping
  259.                     List' and 'Batch Print' features on the Utilities Menu.
  260.                     These options only process marked recipes, allowing you

  272.                     produce a consolidated list of ingredients to use as a
  273.                     shopping list!

  278.                It is impossible to cover all the features of Meal-Master in
  279.                this short file, but the preceding instructions, with some
  280.                experimentation, should get you started using Meal-Master.

  283.                descriptions of all Meal-Master's features.  As a registered
